 STRIKE SAVER

Tips and Tricks...

We’ve been developing and using the Strike Saver Downrigger and Planer Board Release Systems for over two years and have learned some interesting ways to use the system most effectively. Here are a couple of tips and tricks to get the most of your Strike Saver!

  Downrigger

 Setup Faster…

  • With the Strike Saver system you can drop all your downrigger ball lines immediately to the desired depths and then attach Strike Saver releases rigged and ready. This make's set up time much faster!

Find the Right Depth…

  • Hookup and lower the Strike Saver downrigger release until you feel it hit the ball – depths over 60 feet are harder to sense. Also, watch the rod tip – it will straighten out, then reel in and when it starts to bend… you’re there!
  • Line counter reel – calibrate the reel with downrigger ball by hooking fishing line to downrigger and lower to 50 to 100 feet, reading line counter on reel, they vary.
  • Fishing depths over 100 feet…recommend fishing with a twelve pound ball.In deep water the downrigger ball angle becomes too great and the Strike Saver can stall when it reverses to ascend (return). A twelve-pound ball will maintain a better angle and the Strike Saver performance you expect. If you still have a return issue…slow the speed of the boat and that will trigger a line angle change. Strike Saver will be coming right up and you can return to your trolling speed and reset.

Use Your Graph…

  • If you can see your cannonballs on the graph, you can usually see Strike Saver on the descent and when it reaches the ball.
  • Even more effective is a second transducer mounted on trim tabs just raise trim tab so you can see all four downrigger balls very clearly. You will see the Strike Saver dive down on the screen. This is a real nice feature since you can watch them on the depth finder and move them up or down to match the fish you’re seeing. (Recommended method)

Easy to Stack…

  • Stacking is simple if you keep a couple things in mind… first, use the white plated, “no hook” Strike Saver on the bottom. When a fish strikes on the bottom release simply bring the top/stacked Strike Saver up to the surface to avoid any tangles. If you forget, the bottom release will slide up to the stacked release and you can bring them both up and reset after you land the fish.
  • If you use a Strike Saver with a lag line hook both on the bottom and as a stacker, then you need to remember which rod has the bottom release and if that goes, raise the other stacked line up to the surface.
  • You can adjust Strike Saver lag line hook by bending it up for sooner release. Bending down will increase line-holding time. Play with it and find the right angle you like.

Why Release Clip…

  • We recommend the optional release snap clip…it makes for a smoother release, less line stress. Try with and without the clip and see the difference.

Optional Release Setups...

  •  Try one of these two optional release setups that do not involve twisting the line... quick and easy attachment and same smooth release. See diagram below

  •

    Release Mechanism is adjustable…

    • To adjust the release mechanism tension…take snap swivel off fishing line attached to Strike Saver and place Strike Saver on downrigger line. Let the Strike Saver dive a few feet then stop and reel Strike Saver up. If it releases, the release is too loose. Tighten tension screw and repeat.

No Cannonballs to Crank Up and Down…

    • Means it’s simple to check and change lures in less than a minute. Snap and change a lure…Strike Saver will be back at the surface in 20-40 seconds depending on depth (under a 100 feet), ready to reconnect and send down. Its that simple and habit forming!

Don’t Avoid Long Lining any more…

    • The Strike Saver hook prevents loose (lag) line…with a tight line on a hookset the lure can be any distance back behind the boat minimizing spooking. You’re more confident and will catch more fish.

    Planer Board Release

How to Handle Multiple Board Line Releases…

    • When using multiple Strike Saver board releases on the same side of the boat, you must reel in the inner line or lines when an outer line has a fish on. So…if the furthest release from the boat near the planner board catches a fish and begins to move back up the planer board line toward the boat (with a tight line from the fish to the rod), simply reel in the next closest line(s)toward the boat. The inner lines can be sent back out on the planner board line as soon as the outer line with the fish has been freed from the Strike Saver “lag line hook” at about 8’ feet from the boat.
    • You don’t have to unhook the inner lines. They won’t tangle as you troll along. When the outer line Strike Saver release is separated near the boat, it’s now within reach so you can retrieve it and reset after catching your fish. It’s easy once you do it on the water.
    • Optional dual board line pulley system, attach a small pulley (like the pulley on the ball retrieve line) directly to the planer board (without a swivel) run the board line from the top of mast through the top of pulley, and attach to a shock cord at the base of the mast.  This creates a dual board line system.  First line out, use the top board line - let it out near the board.  Second and third lines use the lower board line.  Works great!
